On Sunday, 6 October 1968, the crewmembers of the USS DIODON (SS- 349) noticed an unexpected visitor lurking in the warmth at their tank tops.
A small, obviously ill, sea-lion had taken shelter on DIODON’s hospitality, "George", as the crew named their visitor, enjoyed four days of pampering by the friendly crew of DIODON.
Wednesday. DIODON noticed that the condition of George was taking a turn for the worse, and wisely decided to call Sea World and turn George over to experienced handlers.
Sea World sent trainer, Bill Capach, to the submarine pier for George. After a brief struggle, Mr. Cap ach and his assistant finally managed to get George topside. From here, there was only the short walk to the Sea World truck at the end of the sub-pier, amongst good-byes by the crew of DIODON.
George is now under the care of Doctor Kenny at Sea World. At present, the sea lion is suffering from an infection of the lungs. He is under quarantine and on antibiotics. Dr, Kenny stated that George was born in May 1967 and his outlook is fairly good. The doctor also stated that approximately 30 sea lions a year are reported found on beaches and patios in California. These sea lions are almost always ill, if they are forced ashore. The number to call if you should find a sea lion on your patios 224-3535.
