Web Master Comment:   Augustus was on duty with Pappy Graham in the Maneuvering Room during transit from Hong Kong to Japan during a Typhoon.  A fire ball erupted behind the port cubicle, as I recall, and the sparks as it hit the bus bars on the back of the control station ignited oily rags in the lower deck.  Copious clouds of black smoke filled the room.  At the same time, the SS 349 took a tremendous roll to starboard and promptly flooded the two starboard engines through the exhaust lines. 

Gus and Pappy almost died from smoke inhalation before they could be gotten out of the room.
