Diodon shipmate? Yes -When/No: Yes - Dec,1948 to Dec,1950.
I haven't found many "old timers" to contact but there a lot of names recalled from way back then. Lujay Auclair, Estil Hooper, Shorty Musser, "Lupe", Stan Reed, Ed Smith (smitty), Vince Solari and Dave Trudell who passed away a couple years ago.
I was on the old 349 when we went to Acapulco (Mexico) in 1949 and I remember well the snorkel trip from San Diego to Pearl in Aug. or Sept.,1950. We thought that was a great accompolishment until about 2 weeks later the Perch snorkeled from Hong Kong to Pearl Harbor.
Stationed in Yokuska we made a 2 week patrol to the Hokaido Straights in Dec 1950. Upon our return to the Youkska port I was informed that I had T.B. and was taken off the boat and flown back to the states.
Having to leave that crew was one of the saddest days in my life. I would like to hear from any of my shipmates from way back then. I plan to be in Duluth for the reunion in Sept. I really enjoyed reading your site Jim. Thanks!

Comments:
Sure would be nice to hear from some of the "old timers" I saw Smitty ( Edgar Smith) at the Peoria reunion. Also have tried to contact several of the shipmates I served with listed on this site.
We snorkled from San Diego to Pearl in the fall of 1950. Then on to Guam and manuevers with aircraft. From there we went to Yokuska, Japan. In late Nov. '50 we spent two weeks in the Hokaido Straights, submerged all day and charged the batteries all night on the surface.
Lots of memories from way back then. See you in Duluth 9/19/02.
