Subject: Knife Switch Joe (author)

The author, W0 Harry Kirtland, USN, ret. was my civilian leadman, when I had the AUW shop at SUBASE NLON,CT in 1963. There were about 5-6 civilians in the shop (all retired TMs).

After I reported onboard for duty, Harry gave me a briefing on the background of the people with him. He then asked me if my father was a retired submarine torpedoman that made CWO during WWII and I told him yes, and that he did quite a few years on the boats in Pearl.

He told me he had done duty with my father back in the 40's. Harry Kirtland was a poet from the old school, he could make a poem from any subject or thing, he was quite a scholarly gentleman, that I had the privilege to know.
