Henry Breault's citation and when he died

Enlisted Medal of Honor Winner

Henry Breault put the safety of his shipmate before himself.

Although he could have escaped his sinking submarine, he closed the hatch and returned to the side of his shipmate who could not have gotten out.

Breault had no way of knowing that they would be rescued in thirty-one hours.  He chose not to allow his shipmate to face a slow death alone.

Henry Breault set the bar for generations of submariners.

His example give merit to the value of and the pride we have in our dolphins.  Those silver dolphins make Henry Breault your shipmate.

The Medal was presented by President Coolidge at the White House on 8 March 1924.
