NSL UPDATE 03-11-2002
PUGET SOUND, Wash. (NNS) -- A team from the Puget Sound Naval
Shipyard recently returned USS Alaska (SSBN 732) to the fleet ahead of schedule,
after
completing a D-5 backfit -- an upgrade to the sub's missile system.
Alaska, an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine home ported in Bangor, Wash.,
returned to the fleet in top condition seven days ahead of schedule and more
than $4 million under budget, following a complex 19-month overhaul at Puget
Sound Naval Shipyard. The Alaska project team successfully upgraded missile
systems, command and control systems, performed propulsion maintenance and
accomplished extensive preservation. Additionally, 30 ship alterations were
completed.
Vice Adm. Pete Nanos, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), presented
the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award to Tony Frey, project
superintendent, and letters of commendation to members of the Alaska project
team in a recent ceremony at the NAVSEA commander's forum in Seattle.
Alaska has been under the leadership of Cmdr. Kenneth J. Voorhees since April
2000.
