Kursk Torpedoes

The SS-N-16 torpedo, typical for all classes of Russian
nuclear-powered submarines, is driven by a liquid-fuel turbojet engine. The
fuel is liquid oxygen plus oxidizer – law water hydrogen peroxide. The
torpedo, which has a wake-homing acoustic head, runs at the speed 50 knots,
its range being 50 km.
Torpedoes are filled with fuel and oxidizer before they are loaded on
board a submarine.
Fuel and oxidizer are combined within the combustion chamber and put
the turbine into motion. Kinetic energy from the turbine is conveyed to the
propeller. The engine is set into motion after the torpedo is pushed is pushed
from the torpedo tube by the hydraulic drive.
