Troops, Spouses, Widows, and Friends,
Tom Gould's Brown Bag project is off and running....but due to Tom losing his
wife, he cannot manage the project at this time. You can read his note below.
Floyd Sears has agreed manage the effort and work with all of you with regard to
keeping us all on the same sheet of music.
Any information, suggestions, thoughts, questions, etc that you have on the
effort, please contact FLOYD SEARS
fsears@bellsouth.net PH: 228-396-9830
PLEASE SEND FLOYD AN EMAIL LETTING HIM KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE SENT YOUR FIRST BROWN
BAG(S). This simple address will get your letter to your Rep/Senator:
Senator ___________
U.S. Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20510
Representative___________
U.S. Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20505
My
first brown bag notes went in the mail today to Rep Jeff Miller, House
Speaker Dennis Hastert, and Senator Bill Frist......Floyd will establish a "kick
off" date understanding that Congress convenes January 4, 2005 and it takes up
to 2 weeks to get mail past US Capitol security and onto a
Representatives/Senators desk.
We
appreciate Tom and Floyd's efforts and believe this is a viable project to make
some impact.......will it work? We don't know, but doing nothing will get us
nothing......pitch in and help in this project.
For those that did not receive Tom's plan, look below.
Harry Riley, CAG Rep
Troops, Spouses, Widows, and Friends,
Here's the plan: Every retiree involved in this broken promise issue should do
this .....once a week ....rip up a piece of a old brown paper bag ....don't cut
the section out "nice and clean" just rip it out with your hands (about 8" X10"
will do). Now ....its important that everyone uses a brown paper bag ....no
other paper will do.
Then on your piece of paper bag ....write, print or whatever is your quick
message to the congressman/woman .... it doesn't have to be great "English" or
"the correct words" ....just plain words to say
"You and the government broke your promise to me and my family" ....or "I want
to see you put a bill on the floor that restores my rights to free medical care" ...you get the idea. You can write it in grease pencil
...ink ...paint.... whatever... don't even try to be neat and tidy.
Put it in an envelope and with one 37 cent stamp send it off to Congress.
Now ....if all of us do this simple thing ...once a week ...every week...week
after week ....we will finally get their attention and the reason is this:
Every week just about every member of congress is going to be getting these pieces of brown bag ....with the note on them ....and the more of us that do this well ....congress will be getting thousands of these pieces of brown bag week after week.
And the cost to us: one piece of brown bag, a little grease pencil, and one 37 cent stamp a week plus envelope. We will be sending
thousands of these to congress week after week ....sooner or later a news
reporter will pick up on it and then we are on TV. There is no cheaper way to
do this with as much force.
I know...the idea may sound dumb ....but ...surprise some of your friends
and bring it up as an "off the wall" idea. After they stop laughing and "really
think about the idea" they just might see the power in it for the price. The
idea is using your mailing list ....send the idea out to your people and pick a
starting date ...from then on we all write once a week on ripped brown paper bag
a note to congress. And for only 37 cents a week. After a congressperson gets
about 2000 or so of these a week ....just seeing the brown paper notes falling
out of the envelopes will tell them what the message is.
I use to write congress, and have sent them hundreds of e-mails ....I will
tell you sending e-mail is the worst way to contact them.
What we need is brown paper notes, every week, being sent week after week ..... I believe the simple approach, low cost, direct mail is the way to go. Enough of this for now. I hope you will at least "consider" this approach and talk it over with others for "updating" ideas if necessary.

Floyd Sears COMMENT:
Folks, I say "GO" when you are ready. I've already started. My "Brown Bag"
postcards are in the mail to all of my Mississippi REPs. I think the "BROWN BAG
PROJECT" is as good as any code name we will come up with. So, the project has a
name. You can see what it's all about below, and I say we are ready to go. I
agree with Harry Riley. Will the BROWN BAG PROJECT do any good? Well, we will
not know until we try it.
I'm going to harp on one of my hang-ups for a bit. We gotta know what is going
on. We gotta know if the Congress is being contacted. I've set up a way to keep
track of what is going on. Goto
http://mrgrg-ms.org/ and look for the gold boxes. You will see a "click-on"
that will allow you to tell other people that you contacted a REP. Just follow
the instruction as the web pages come up. You will see another "click-on" where
you can go see what other people are doing (contacts made). Below that you will
see a record book where you can add some details if you like (so that people can
see your name if you so desire).
If you decide that you don't want to fool with any of that stuff then send me an
e-mail (Subject: Contacts), tell me who you contacted (do it each time you make
a contact), and I'll click the boxes for you, but please let us know what you
are doing. However, don't send me an e-mail and tell me that you contacted all
of you REPs like some people do. Please don't make me look up the names of your
REPs.
IF YOU NEED A REASON TO DO ALL THAT I'M ASKING YOU TO DO AND YOU DON'T HAVE ONE
THEN DO IT TO HUMOR ME! And, just one more thing... send this to your e-mail
list... please.

Subject: Brown bag project...
I was hoping I could pull everything together but I'm finding I can't at this
time. Some one else will have to lead this project.
My
problem is this: My wife died in April and I'm having a terrible time
adjusting. Figured if I got into a project I'd get a lot of the pressure off
myself.
In four or five days I have to shut down my computer ....and go back to
Texas. I'm selling my house there ...buying a new house here in Georgia ...have
all the packing and moving to do. My children are worried about me and I have
to see if I can just get my life back together again.
Married for 48 years so the lost to me and my family is great. Once I get
things at least half way back to normal ...and able to get my computer back on
line I'll check in. Plan on taking the time for my "paper bag mail" regardless
of where I am. Take care ...and I believe the project will work if not I have
another idea that we may want to try.
