Korean War project aims to thank veterans for service

Retired teacher and former Navy Lt. Larry Schultheis answered the call to serve his country on June 25, 1950, becoming one of the 1.8 million Americans who served in the Korean War.
This year is the 49th anniversary of the signing of the 1953 armistice that brought American troops home from what is often referred to as "the forgotten war."
"This war wasn't really a people's war," said Schultheis, who lives in Chula Vista. "People can point to Pearl Harbor, and most recently, the World Trade Center, but rarely do you hear someone say, 'Do you remember Pusan?' "
The San Miguel Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution of South Bay wants to change that. For the last two years the chapter has taken part in the Department of Defense's Korean War Commemoration, which began June 25, 2000. The three-year event ends Nov. 11, 2003.
Along with 5,000 commemoration partners around the world, the chapter has created exhibits about the war for the National City and South Chula Vista libraries. The chapter distributes service lapel pins similar to those given to Wor...
