Letters With the Veterans' Stamp Of Approval

(EXCERPT) Correspondence Collection To Be Distributed to Troops, by Linton Weeks Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, May 1, 2002; Page C01

Imagine it -- most authors do imagine it, impossible as it seems -- having millions of readers.

Andrew Carroll, the mastermind behind "War Letters: Extraordinary Correspondence From American Wars," is making it happen.

Today the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Washington Square Press will begin handing out about 2.5 million abridged versions of Carroll's book. Many of them will go to veterans and friends of the VFW. Some will be distributed to active-duty troops in the United States and abroad.

"We feel that this is a special book," says Jerry Newberry, a spokesman for the VFW. "We consider it a personal gift to our veterans and active service people."

According to John Y. Cole, director of the Center for the Book at the Library of  Congress, the book represents the first Armed Services Edition to be published in 55 years.
