MONTVILLE-- By 2011, retired Navy Cmdr. Patrick Dougherty suspects he will have
saved about $700 in state taxes he pays on his retired military pay.
Each year, the 64-year-old Montville resident and former Montville mayor who
served 30 years in the Navy, pays slightly more than $1,000 in taxes on his
military pay.
News the state included a 50 percent exemption of federally taxable military
retirement pay from the state income tax, effective in 2008, made Dougherty a
happy man.
The exemption affects retired members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines,
Coast Guard, Army and Air National Guard.
"It's long overdue," Dougherty said. "Being in the armed forces, I think you
should be given that benefit. Personally there are a lot of guys that retire at
a lower rate, that could benefit more from a few extra hundred bucks than me.
That's a huge thing."
Dougherty said he believes the day a person retires, they should be exempt from
state income tax.
"You're still paying federal, all state taxes as far as sales, gas and whatever
fees," Dougherty said. "I think it's a great idea. The poor guys coming back
from Iraq that have lost an arm or a leg, they've got a Purple Heart. For
somebody like that it should be automatic -- no income tax."
