Subject: [vetissues] Questions about Social Security and the DD-214

1. Does the SS automatically include my military service years when calculating my monthly SS benefit payments.

·       Not always. In most cases the SS will not have your military years listed in your SS file even though you paid into your account while you were in the military. To include those years you will need to provide SS a copy your DD-214.

2. I served during WW2 so I don't have a DD-214. What do I show SS?

·       The form you were issued when you left the military prior to 1950 is called the WD AGO 53-55. The WD form is the predecessor to the DD-214/DD-217/DD-215, etc. The WD form was normally printed on the back of your Discharge certificate.

3. Do any of my medals possibly count for increased benefits or payments?

·       Not unless you received the Medal of Honor and part of your monthly MOH payment award was paid into you SS account.

4. Where can I find out more about SS?

·       Go to URL: http://www.ssa.gov

5. I served in Vietnam. Do in-country war veterans get an additional dollar increase in the SS payments due to our war service?

·       No. You already got your combat pay during your in-country service.
